2017 Alicante

Alicante Bouschet / Syrah

Los Angeles County

SOLD OUT

Description

The 2017 Alicante is a blend of 75% Alicante Bouschet from Swayze Vineyard, and 25% Syrah from the Smith Vineyard, both in the high elevations of the Antelope Valley. The wine was aged in a mixture of new and neutral French and American oak barrels for 54 months. One of the few varietals to have red-colored juice, Alicante’s popularity rose during prohibition as it could be stretched by bootleggers who added water, and was a favorite of home winemakers on the east coast as it’s thick skins made it able to survive a cross-country train ride. The varietal is sparsely planted in California these days, making it a rarity.

Tasting Notes

Sweet vanilla, candied fruit, and spiced boysenberry are front and center on the lively, expressive nose. The sip is soft and silky with red fruits dominating the occasion, backed up with lingering acidity, with a kiss of earth and tobacco. Red currents and pink peppercorns draw out an unexpectedly lengthy finish.

Vineyard Notes

The 2017 vintage in Los Angeles marked the end of California’s extreme drought. An extremely wet winter saw the state’s reservoirs and water table restored to normal levels. Additionally, the cooler winter set up a longer growing season, which allowed all of our fruit to hang for an additional two to three weeks. The extra time on the vine produced fruit with vibrant and expressive flavors.
